Preaching Liturgical Actions and Texts for Mission - Preachers: Apply Now!

Amazed at their gracious words: Liturgical preaching for mission
All spoke well of Jesus and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.
Luke 4:22

The mission of Associated Parishes is to promote the liturgical formation of the worshipping assembly for its mission in the world. We are committed to engaging in the essential work of exploring, making, and sharing the intrinsic connections between our worship and witness, sacrament and service, liturgy and advocacy.

We are pleased to invite a group of preachers to spend a year with mentors in reading, learning and preaching on the liturgical actions and liturgical texts that form our liturgies as found in The Book of Common Prayer 1979, the Book of Alternative Services 1983, or Evangelical Lutheran Worship 2006, as these actions and words invite the assembly into its particular mission.

Preachers selected for the program will gather online on September 15 (1 PM Pacific) for an Orientation to this initiative, and four subsequent seminars with readings, the last seminar in January 2027 (see dates below). In Late Winter and Spring 2027, each preacher will preach three times on a liturgical action or liturgical text that orients the worshipping assembly toward its mission in daily life. The three sermon transcripts and recordings (or links to livestream) will be submitted to APLM. One sermon from each preacher will be selected for publication on APLM’s website. A celebratory gathering online will conclude the program.

Applicants will complete the application form and submit it by Friday, August 14, to openaplm@gmail.com.

Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision within a few weeks.

Applicants are required to attend the orientation gathering on Tuesday, September 15 (1 PM Pacific) and four (4) webinars on liturgical preaching scheduled on the following dates: September 29 (10 AM Mountain); October 26 (12 Noon Pacific); November 17 (11 AM Pacific); and January 14 (11 AM Pacific).

Each preacher will receive an honorarium of $1000, of which $250 will be paid in December 2026 and $750 in May 2027.

This program is made possible through a Vital Worship, Vital Preaching Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with funds provided by Lilly Endowment Inc.
